Happy Canada Day!

Whoo, go us Canadians ^.^ I am trying to persuade the British to celebrate our ways. I sent one of them a text at 2:00 am Canada time, which is around 7:00 am British time, to remind them very subtly that it was Canada Day. Like, HAPPY CANADA DAY!!! That is skill.

"Yeah, Wacko Jacko, where did that come from? Some English tabloid. I have a heart and I have feelings. I feel that when you do that to me. It’s not nice."
I've been meaning to say that I am really sad about Michael Jackson. I am halting the BB picture for now. Now I'm doing a picture called "Misunderstood: Tribute," which, yes, is for Michael Jackson. It's him as a boy, as he was. The reference picture is so cute, it's tragic. It makes me sad, anyway. I have to fold it over (it's in the newspaper) every time I go into my room, because I can't look at it. I haven't started it yet because I've been busy. What did you think of his death? I was shocked, and then I kind of fell ill, and then I couldn't stop thinking about it, and I still can't. And I can't stop singing Man in the Mirror. It's SO sad! Well, I think it is. I can't believe he's dead. That's like Elvis dying. It's horrible. I think the worst thing was all the rumours, and not knowing what's true and what's not, if any of it is, and if it is, how much of it is. I just think it's sad, everything, and how he himself kept calling himself "the loneliest person in the world" even since he was in the Jackson 5. And also the fact that he said "No one will ever know how much all these wicked rumours have hurt me." And also the fact that he thought he needed to change his face. Actually, I think almost everything concerning Micheal Jackson is sad, so I'll stop now, or else I'll go on forever.

But I know that he would never have harmed a child. He was only a child at heart himself.
"And I remember going to the record studio and there was a park across the street and I’d see all the children playing and I would cry because it would make me sad that I would have to work instead."

“I will say again that I have never, and would never, harm a child. It sickens me that people have written untrue things about me.”

So finally, I'll just leave you with one last quote.

“In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe.” - Michael Jackson, 1958-2009

Svera Knows Best.

SVERA
*Svera is an amazing artist. Like, one of the best pencil artists I know.* As you may or may not be aware, I love drawing, much more than I like photomanipulation. However, I have stopped uploading my drawings (I have only done so on one occasion, after which it was soon deleted) because it ruins my sense of privacy. Anyway, recently I received the opportunity to ask *Svera some questions, which she was kind enough to answer for me (Be warned...my questions seem really stupid :XD:)

~Horseyangel I'm trying to draw humans. Do you have any tips?
*Svera Humans are difficult to draw, but like always the most important thing ist practice. Nobody recognized my first humans either and for a time I've drawn only those people with a very individual face, so I could be sure people will know who I've drawn although they didn't look like the reference ;)

~Horseyangel With practice, what did you do? Draw the same human over and over till he was recognizable, or just keep trying new people? How did you start...like, with the eyes or what? I never know where to start.
*Svera I don't think it matters who you draw, even if it is the same person over and over again. After a time you'll develop some technique with will make you able to draw other people as well.
More important is to use references you're really interested in. Drawing portraits can be boring very fast, especially when you draw hair or skin texture. So first of all look for a reference you really like and where you want some time spent with it.
I normally start with the eyes, but I've also seen people starting with the form of the face. Just try things out until you know what is the best way for you.
Most artists work with some kind of grid. You divide your reference in squares as well as your paper. This way you can easier see how the proportions are.
Or you could try to measure these things. I normally start with the eyes, because this way I can use the distance between the eyes to compare it with the distance to the nose, the mouth and so on.
I'm not very good with explaining things, but I hope that helps you a bit :)

~Horseyangel Wow, thanks :) The thing I struggle most with is shading...I never know whether I use the edge or the pencil or what, or where, or how dark or anything. I've seen blending tutorials, but those are for after you've done the initial shading...which I can't do.
How long did it take you to get so good?

*SveraYou're welcome :)
I usually start with a soft shading with hard pencils (mostly F or B, sometimes 2B). And than I begin to darken with softer pencils (3B to 8B). There are always many layers of pencil strokes. These layers look a bit like lots of Xs. This means you never make pencils strokes only in one direction. For skin it's good to make circles, it resembles a bit the skin texture.
How long did it take you to get so good?
Hard to say. I have been drawing since I can hold a pencil, so now for approx. 20 years. But I started with real portraits at the age of 15, so for that one I needed 10 years.
I got a lot better since I joined DA two years ago, because then I saw what other people could do and tried to achieve the same.

~Horseyangel So never stroke in the same direction. Thanks, that's really great advice...I've been shading wrong! I want to draw this... so I'll try shading his skin in circles, yeah?
Whoa, 10 years. That's actually quite quick because your standard is so high. That's very inspirational, thanks for your time and help! Now I can practice so I can one day be as good as you. :)
*Svera Nice reference :) Yes, for most of the skin you draw in circles. For the area around the eyes you could draw with lines, because of the wrinkles.
I guess you could learn it a lot faster, if you would draw mostly portraits. I just draw many other things as well, so it takes more time to improve.
You're welcome :)

~Horseyangel Thanks again for all your kind advice. I will try to do everything you have told me :D

I can't ride.

Sun Jun 21, 2009, 6:35 AM
Okay. If you were taking horse riding lessons, in a group, and one day a new person turned up in your group, what would you think? What would you think of her if she couldn't canter properly, or kept putting one leg too far back? Would you think she was an idiot?

Because I want to know what people think of me when I ride.

I only started riding around a year ago, and I only go every month or so, excluding Christmas/summer, because it's really expensive :( So in all, I've probably been about 15 times in my life. That's not very good, is it?

And now that I'm riding in a group, I always feel like I'm doing things wrong. Like, I'm too close to the horse in front, or maybe too far back, or maybe my stirrups are too long or my heels aren't down or I'm not sitting straight enough. Or maybe I should have been able to mount from the ground like everyone else instead of using the block. And I should probably know how to pick a hoof, for crying out loud.

It's not the horses I don't know how to act around - it's the people. And that's really quite sad :XD:

Also, why is it so hard for me to pass the crop from one side to another when everyone else can do it without tangling up their reins and taking about ten centuries?? :P
